When a product leaves the factory, you want to know what is actually in it. Not what was designed, but what was built. Which parts, which versions, which adjustments. As-built documentation software captures that, per order, per serial number, per step.

In many manufacturing companies, as-built documentation is kept in Excel, on paper, or not at all. Operators make an adjustment during assembly, an alternative part is used, a step is skipped: it is rarely recorded. And when a service technician shows up at the customer months later, or a certification audit arrives, the searching begins. Which version was in it? Who changed what? The as-built no longer matches the as-designed. That costs time, leads to errors in maintenance, and makes warranty claims impossible to substantiate. While the information was simply there on the shop floor, just never recorded.
